FM Systems - A Hearing Aid User's Story

Says Paul Minikin RHAD MSHAA - Hearing Aid Audiologist FM Systems for hearing aids have been around for a while now, in my view they are a well kept secret. They have had a reputation in the past of being a bit complicated and many in my industry (myself included) have given them a wide berth. I have had the good fortune recently to receive some in depth training on FM Systems and have realised what a terrific piece of technology they are, and how they can be a valuable piece of the puzzle to fulfil the most challenging of hearing losses and the most difficult listening environments.
I have recently performed a trial with one of my clients, Mrs. O.B. I know she will not mind me saying her hearing loss is quite a challenge! One ear is completely nerve deaf, the other ear has about a 60% loss with a condition called Menieres Disorder, which amongst other problems distorts the quality of sound she does hear.

I decided to try an FM Hearing System with Mrs. O.B. as a 'guinea pig' and I have to say the results have been very encouraging. I asked Mrs. O.B. to put down in words how she was feeling after the trial and here are some of the comments she came up with;

'what a fantastic invention'

'the hearing aid made all the difference, this is the icing on the cake'

'classical music is so much nicer, the violins sound really nice'

'I can hear conversations in the other room, that's unheard of'

'with the zoom background noise is really reduced'

'i can watch the television without having to watch the lips, its great'

Says Paul ; FM Hearing Systems are not for every client, but where appropriate I feel they can really make a difference, particularly more severe losses and where maximum speech clarity in noise is paramount.

Mrs. O.B. was certainly impressed!
